Walks around Kočna and Vintgar

Plan walks near Kočna and Bled: Vrše, Okamenela baba, Obranca and Mežakla, with current Vintgar access links and advice for choosing your outing.

View towards Bled from the slopes above Kočna

Kočna above Blejska Dobrava is a base for the wooded slopes of Mežakla as well as the Bled area. Vrše, Okamenela baba and Obranca are local walking destinations recorded in Pod Skalco's property guide. Vintgar is another nearby outing, with managed entry arrangements that need separate planning.

Choose a route for your ability, the weather and available daylight. This guide introduces places to discuss with the hosts. It does not replace a current map or route description.

Vintgar: plan the entrance and return

Before leaving, read the operator's current visitor information. Confirm opening, admission requirements, how to reach the entry point and the return route. The gorge follows an organised one-way visit. Approaching the river from the Kočna or Blejska Dobrava side is not the same as reaching the entrance.

An older version of this article gave a half-hour walk to the entrance. Do not use that estimate to plan admission. Follow the current access map and include travel from and back to the apartment in your plans. Check the suitability of the whole route for your group.

Vrše and Okamenela baba

Vrše is a local viewpoint above the village. Okamenela baba, the petrified woman, is a rock formation beneath Mežakla associated with local stories. Both are reasons to explore the landscape around Kočna beyond the lake.

Ask the hosts which approach suits your group and whether conditions are suitable. Carry a current map. A short distance does not guarantee an easy surface: roots, wet ground and elevation change the effort involved.

Obranca and the Mežakla plateau

Obranca is a mountain pasture above the village. The wider Mežakla area also has a natural bridge and a snow cave mentioned in the older property guide. Plan these as mountain outings, with the route and conditions checked beforehand.

Do not enter a cave or follow an unmarked route simply because it appears on a list of sights. Ask for appropriate local guidance. The Triglav National Park visitor site provides official information for visits in the park area.

Prefer a gentler day near Bled?

Choose a suitable section of the lakeside or a route from the official Bled walking guide. Consider the surface and gradient of the actual route. A forest path and a lakeside stroll are different outings.

Before setting out

  • Confirm your route, start point and return transport.
  • Check weather, daylight, closures and admission rules.
  • Choose footwear and clothing for the terrain.
  • Carry water, a map and a charged phone.
  • Ask about today's conditions rather than relying on old timings.

Our three-day Bled and nature plan combines different outings. The quiet-stay guide describes the house and surroundings you return to.
