The house
Pod Skalco is our family house in Kočna, a hamlet of a few dozen houses on the sunny shelf above Blejska Dobrava. The two apartments take up the whole ground floor: each has its own entrance, its own terrace, and 42 m² arranged around a proper kitchen. In front there is a garden with a pond; behind, the forest starts immediately.
Upstairs live your hosts, Claudia Arlt and Bruno Kalčič. They are around when you need a trail suggestion or a restaurant booking, and invisible when you don't. Claudia speaks Slovenian, German and English.
"Pod skalco" means under the rock. The house is named after the rock standing at its eastern corner. Above the village, under the slopes of Mežakla, sits the rock pillar the locals call Okamenela baba, the petrified woman.
The wrought-iron beds and furniture were forged by Bruno in his own smithy. Guests who ask are welcome to come and watch him work.
The apartments
Planika and Encijan are equivalent: 42 m² each on the ground floor, sleeping up to four. Bedroom with a hand-forged wrought-iron double bed and a bunk bed, living room with TV, fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, private entrance and a terrace onto the garden. Named after the flowers that grow on the rock above, edelweiss and gentian. Take whichever is free; if both are, take either.

Solid rustic timber and wrought iron throughout. The kitchen has a hob, oven, fridge, dishwasher, microwave, kettle, toaster and coffee machine. Enough to cook properly for a week, not just reheat.

The area
The lake, the island, the castle. Five kilometres away; go early, before the buses arrive.
Plan a visit using the current Vintgar entry and return instructions. For local walks, ask about routes on the slopes above Kočna.
Cross-country on Pokljuka, downhill at Kranjska Gora, and the snow cave up on Mežakla.
The Radovna valley, the Pericnik and Martuljek waterfalls, fly fishing, and swimming in Bohinj.

It is five kilometres from Lake Bled, three kilometres from the A2 motorway, and about a 35-minute drive from Ljubljana Airport. The Vintgar Gorge is a half-hour walk away and Triglav National Park begins at the edge of the village.
